Poudre de riz: A fragrance inspired by kings and queens
Rice powder has long held a special place in cosmetics and perfumery.
In the time of Louis XIV, it was already used in these fields, but in a somewhat different way to today.
A little history...
During the reign of Louis XIV, the court of Versailles was a center of fashion and sophistication, where appearance was a major preoccupation. Toiletry was a complex social and aesthetic ritual, involving a multitude of body and hair care products.
Water, then considered harmful to the skin, was replaced by powders and perfumes as a means of maintaining a certain hygiene.
Often scented with floral extracts, essences of plants such as lavender, violet or iris rhizome, powders helped mask body odors.
Rice powder or similar powders such as flour were also commonly used to whiten the complexion and mask skin imperfections. In those days, pale skin was a sign of nobility and high social status. It indicated that one was not exposed to the sun, unlike manual laborers. Multi-purpose, these powders, particularly starch-based ones, were also used to fix and whiten wigs.
...What about fragrances with powdery notes?
Today, in perfumery, the scent of “rice powder” is created exclusively from synthetic compounds. Indeed, direct extraction of this scent - of rice - is impossible.
Both warm and sensual, “rice powder” fragrances are said to evoke a powdery, soft, enveloping scent. Often nostalgic, this scent is reminiscent of vintage make-up and toiletries that marked history. This type of fragrance is often characterized by notes of violet, iris and sometimes aldehydes, giving it a powdery, airy quality.
